About me

Hello! I’m Ali Hodgkinson, an artist living and working in Folkestone. You can see some of my work here. I have been teaching art to adults and young people in this beautiful seaside town since 2015.

My in-person painting classes help students build strong practical skills while encouraging them to embrace their own way of seeing. After all, it is uniqueness that takes art from good to great.

Recently, I developed 7:7 Sketchbook Journey, my first online course. 7:7 grew out of what I noticed over more than a decade of teaching: young people often arrive in the art room feeling they belong there while many adults arrive with a much harsher internal dialogue. 7:7 aims to help adults reconnect with that childlike sense of possibility through a seven-week sketchbook journey.

I studied Art History at the University of London; drawing, painting and printmaking at the Royal Drawing School in Shoreditch; and Portraiture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea. I have a PGCE from the University of Greenwich and have worked in a wide variety of educational settings abroad and at home, including Kensington and Chelsea College, where I was a Course Director.

I am DBS checked and have public liability insurance.

For me, making art is about finding out who we are as artists. My aim is to help people trust their own instincts and approach their work with curiosity, courage and confidence.
